Grand Theft Auto V will not ship with online multiplayer functionality. Announced today, online modes will instead be issued via free update on October 1st, two weeks after the core game’s release. There is no additional charge or online pass to input. It is free to anyone with the disc.
Grand Theft Auto Online creates a persistent world, with separate storylines and 16-player mayhem. Bringing traditional gameplay values of free roam, Online bolsters this with mode creation (races, deathmatch), and financial implications. Earned cash can be spent to purchase luxuries, upgrade characters, and buy new weapons.
Rockstar is considering Online a different space than GTA V. Although using the same engine, Online exists as a consistently updated play space, even expanding the faux-California map.
