Promising Nintendo exclusive Sonic title, Sonic Lost World, will not carry online multiplayer on Wii U. Instead, it will be local play only. By comparison, the 3DS version will allow for online platforming.
On Wii U, co-op play is offered with a combination of Gamepad and WiiMote “support.” Versus play is racing, one person given the TV, the other the Pad. Sega’s 3DS version offers racing online. In a broad interview on Nintendo World Report about Sonic Lost World, producer Takashi Iizuka touts couch play, unfortunately a lost art. In his own words:
“In versus mode, one player will be playing on the TV screen and the other player will be racing using the GamePad so you don’t have to have split screen. You both have your own screen and can race each other. The Wii U multiplayer is not on the Internet. It’s basically everyone sitting on the same couch.”
Seemingly detrimental at first, it is rare a Sonic title is touted for it multiplayer, and what seems like a brisk excursion is arguably not worth the time it would take to code online play. Hopefully the time is spent buttering up single player level design.
