It’s been years since the kickback from the gaming community began over Australia’s game rating system. Games found unsuitable to fit within a restrictive R15 rating assignment were simply not allowed into the country for sale, or were edited to suit the indirect censorship.
Beginning January 1st, 2013, Australian gamers will be able to secure their favorite titles regardless of rating thanks to approval from Parliament.
“The R 18+ category will inform consumers, parents and retailers about which games are not suitable for minors to play, and will prevent minors from purchasing unsuitable material,” said home affairs minister Jason Clare.
One of the sticking points over the rating system was that films were issued under the same rating system, but had the R18 attached for decades. Games, for whatever reason, were locked at R15. Now, both systems are in line with each other.
